10 Essentials for Your New Dog

Congratulations on welcoming a new canine pal to the family! Preparing your home (and yourself!) ahead of time will help ensure your pup’s transition is as smooth as possible. Here’s a handy list of what you’ll need-let’s go shopping and get your doggy essentials sorted!

High-Quality Dog Food

Choose high-quality dog food that is appropriate for your new dog’s age, size, and activity level. There are a lot of options out there, so if you’d like some guidance, consult with your veterinarian to get recommendations for the best diet for your pup.

Food and Water Bowls

Grab sturdy, non-slip bowls that are the right size for your dog’s snout. Choose something that’s easy to clean, and won’t tip over easily. Let’s keep those kibbles and slurps spill-free!

Comfy Bed

Give your pup a cozy spot to rest those paws. Choose a bed that’s appropriate for your dog’s size and sleeping habits; some dogs like soft, cozy beds and others prefer something firmer. Make sure the bed you bring home is washable, and big enough for your pup to stretch out and dream of chasing squirrels!

Fact: There is archaeological evidence dogs were the first animals domesticated by humans more than 30,000 years ago.

Collar, ID Tag & Leash

Keep your furry buddy safe with a secure collar and an ID tag. Make sure that the collar fits snugly without being too tight, and that the ID tag includes your contact details-just in case your pup decides to go on a solo adventure. Choose a leash that’s comfortable to hold and strong enough to handle your dog’s enthusiasm for sniffing every tree and fire hydrant in sight.

Poop Bags

Poop bags are an essential tool for responsible pet ownership. Being a good citizen means not only caring for your furry friend but also for the environment and community. Always carry poop bags during walks to promptly clean up after your pet. By doing so, you contribute to keeping public spaces clean and safe for everyone to enjoy. It’s a simple yet impactful way to demonstrate consideration and responsibility in our shared spaces.

Crate

A crate can provide a safe haven for your new pup, especially during travel or when you’re away from home. Even at home, lots of dogs love to have a den-like space they can call their own. Make sure the crate is the appropriate size for your dog and has proper ventilation.

Tip: Positive reinforcement training is the most effective method of dog training. Positive reinforcement training essentially focuses on rewarding your pet for good behavior, rather than punishing bad behavior.

Toys

Toys are essential for your new pup’s mental and physical health. Look for toys that are appropriate for your dog’s age, size and activity level, and offer a variety of options to see what your dog likes best. If you have a puppy, consider investing in a few durable chew toys-you may find they save your shoes from teething escapades!

Grooming Supplies

Your new pup will need regular grooming to keep their coat and skin shiny and healthy. Stock up on a brush or comb, dog-friendly shampoo, nail clippers, and ear cleaning solution. You’ll have a dapper dog in no time!

Doggy First Aid Kit

Accidents happen, so it’s always good to be prepared. Put together a first aid kit with items like bandages, antiseptic solution, and pet-friendly pain relievers. Lots of human medications can be very dangerous to pets, so consult your vet for specific recommendations about what’s safe to include for your pup.

Cleaning Supplies

Accidents happen, especially with new dogs. Be sure to stock up on cleaning supplies such as stain and odor removers, paper towels, and disinfectants to clean up any messes your new dog may make. While you’re at it, grab some poop bags to carry on your walks-your neighbors will appreciate it!

Treats and Love

Last but certainly not least, stock up on treats for training and rewards. And of course, shower your new furry friend with plenty of love, cuddles, and belly rubs. You’re their favorite human, after all!

There you have it! Now you’re ready to welcome your new fuzzy addition with open arms and a wagging tail. Enjoy the journey of being a dog parent-it’ll be filled with endless love, laughter, and delightful doggy moments. Adventures await!
