The Board of Directors at the Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County is inviting passionate community members to play a hands-on role in shaping the future of animal welfare. We’re currently seeking dedicated individuals to serve as volunteer members on our Board committees.
As a non-board committee member, you’ll collaborate directly with Board leadership to support focused strategic initiatives that drive our mission forward. Your insights, experience, and commitment can help make a meaningful difference for pets and people in our community.

Development Committee
The Development Committee supports the mission of the Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County (HSPTC) by working in partnership with staff to build relationships, expand the organization’s visibility, and increase philanthropic support. The Committee’s primary role is to serve as ambassadors, advocates, and connectors—opening doors to new supporters, stewarding current donors, and enhancing the organization’s culture of philanthropy.

Finance Committee
To oversee the financial health, sustainability, and integrity of the organization. The Finance Committee ensures that the Society operates within a sound financial framework, adheres to best financial practices, and maintains transparency and accountability in financial reporting. The Finance Committee works closely with the CEO, CFO, and other financial staff to monitor budgets, financial policies, and risk management, ensuring the organization has the resources needed to fulfill its mission.

Strategic Planning Committee
The Board Strategy Committee is commissioned by and responsible to the Board of Directors to govern the creation, modification, internal/external communication and upholding of the Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County’s (HSTPC) high level strategic intent. The members of this committee will also make themselves available to the organization’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and senior management staff (as guided by the CEO) to help facilitate a ‘flow down’ of the organizations strategic intent to ensure daily workflows & decisions align with the high-level strategy, and key processes & metrics are in place to guide organizational success.

Governance Committee
In nonprofit organizations, there is a clear division between governance, which is the responsibility of the Board of Directors, and management of the organization which is the responsibility of executives. The Board Governance Committee is commissioned by and responsible to the Board of Directors to consider all governance and constitutional matters, including the membership of the board and its committees and the overall effectiveness of the board.
