Lost Pet Prevention Month

Lot Pet Prevention Month

Did you know 1 in 3 pets go missing? Let’s work together to change the odds! In honor of Petco Love Lost’s National Lost Pet Prevention Month in July, we’ve provided some tips for pet guardians to help reunite their lost pets.

Here a few steps you can take now just in case your pet ever were to go missing:

Microchip Your Pet
A microchip cannot be removed or lost, and is often the last link between a lost pet and its owner. We offer microchipping for low-income residents for just $25, which includes national registration!

Update Microchip Information
If your pet already has a microchip, ensure all the information is up to date. Keep it on your list of information to update anytime you move or have a phone number change.

Check Your Pet’s Collar and Identification
Double check that your pets collar fits well and wouldn’t be easily slipped over their head. License tags must be worn by dogs at all times, so ensure that your license is up to date and is attached to your dog’s collar.

Here are some helpful tips to increase your chances of finding your furry friend if they do go missing:

Walk Around Your Neighborhood
Most lost pets don’t go too far from home, and the majority are found within a mile of their home! Try checking in with neighbors or walking around your neighborhood.

Spread the Word
Utilize social media by posting your missing pet on local community groups and lost and found pet pages. Make flyers and posters to post and distribute in your neighborhood.

Use Online Resources
Post on Nextdoor or lost pet Craigslist pages. If you have Ring, you can post to the neighbors feed, which has partnered with Petco Love Lost so all pets posted there are also shared on their platform.

Post to Petco Love Lost
Enter a photo of your missing pet and search Petco Love Lost’s national lost and found pet database to find them.

Check the Shelter’s Lost Pet Pages
Browse the online listing of found pets in our shelter to see if your pet is listed.

Remember, never give up hope! Some pets have been reunited with their owners months or even years after being lost. Stay positive, stay vigilant, and let’s bring your furry friend home.
