Cat Care 101

Congratulations on becoming a new cat parent! As you get started, you’ll probably have some questions about how to keep your new furry family member happy and healthy. Here are some essentials your cat really wants you to know!

Food and water

Like all animals, cats need a balanced and nutritious diet to stay healthy. You’ll want to provide your cat with high-quality cat food that meets their nutritional needs; if you have questions about your cat’s particular needs, reach out to your vet! Cats are carnivores, so it’s important that animal protein (e.g. beef, chicken or fish) is the first ingredient listed for whichever food you choose. Additionally, provide your cat with fresh, clean water at all times.

Litter box

Cats are naturally clean animals – so they need a clean litter box to do their business! Ensure that you scoop the box daily and clean it thoroughly at least once a week. If you have multiple cats, make sure you have a litter box for every cat, plus one extra. Your cat may prefer a covered box or one that is uncovered; cats with mobility issues may do better with a box with low sides so they can get in and out more easily. Offer different options to figure out which works best for your kitty! Finally, keep litter simple; most cats tend to prefer unscented, non-clumping litter.

Scratching

Cats need to scratch to keep their claws healthy and to mark their territory. Provide your cat with a scratching post or pad and encourage them to use it. If your cat starts scratching your furniture, redirect them to the scratching post. If they continue scratching where they shouldn’t, you can tape a piece of aluminum foil to the area to deter them (you can remove the foil once they find an appropriate place to scratch!).

Cat proofing

Cats are curious creatures-most kittens are downright naughty! To keep kitty safe, cat-proof your home by hiding cords, putting away hazardous materials, and securing windows and doors.

Places to climb and places to hide

Cats love to climb and hide, and research shows that having access to vertical space can especially help anxious kitties. Provide your cat with plenty of places to climb, such as a cat tree or shelving they can safely perch on. Hiding spots are important too, and they don’t have to be fancy-a cardboard box or basic cat tunnel can do the trick!

Grooming

Cats are clean animals and they like to groom themselves, but they still need some help from their humans. Brush your cat regularly to remove loose fur and prevent hairballs. You should also trim your cat’s nails and clean their ears as needed.

Physical and mental stimulation

Like people, cats need mental and physical stimulation to stay healthy and happy. Ensure that you spend time playing with your cat every day; things like wand toys and balls can provide lots of entertainment (for both of you!). And contrary to popular belief, most cats can indeed be trained. Using a positive reinforcement technique like clicker training is a great way to provide mental stimulation and help you bond with your cat.

Love and attention

Cats need love and attention. Make sure to spend quality time with your cat every day-let them know they’re a part of the family! Pet them, snuggle them, talk to them, and show them how much you love them.

Indoor vs. outdoor

This can be a difficult decision; some cats thrive inside, while others may struggle without regular access to the outdoors. Outdoor cats have more freedom and mental stimulation but are at risk of getting into fights, getting hit by cars, and being exposed to diseases; they also threaten local wildlife populations. Indoor cats are safer, but need more mental and physical stimulation to stay physically and behaviorally healthy. As you make this decision, you’ll want to carefully consider your cat’s personality, as well as the potential risks and benefits to each option. There are also ways to give your kitty more controlled access to the outdoors-some cats enjoy time exploring on a leash, or you can construct a “catio” to give your cat all the benefits of the outdoors without any of the risks!

Veterinary care

Regular check-ups with your veterinarian are crucial to keeping your cat healthy, and can help ensure that small issues don’t turn into serious problems. Vet visits are also a great opportunity for you to ask questions and learn more about how to support your cat’s health. Ensure that you keep up with your cat’s vaccinations and schedule yearly wellness exams.

Being a new cat parent is exciting, but it also requires a lot of responsibility! By following these essential tips, you can ensure that your cat is healthy, happy, and thriving. In return, your kitty will be able to bring you joy and be a loyal companion for years to come. Enjoy every moment with your new furry friend!
