You Made it Possible: 246 Rabbits

Shelter staff assisted with the removal of 246 rabbits from one property.
24 hours. 246 rabbits.
On February 16, the Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County assisted with the removal of 246 rabbits from one property – the largest intake of animals at once that the shelter has experienced in quite some time.
As batches of rabbits were transported to our shelter, the long, grueling work began. Each rabbit was removed from their cardboard carrier, physically examined, and microchipped. Each rabbit was then placed in a clean, dry kennel with fresh water and food.
The rabbits arrived in various conditions, with many experiencing upper respiratory infections. Several were also suffering from head tilts and poor muscle control.
“This is a massive undertaking,” says Dr. Jennifer Bennett, chief veterinary officer at the Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County. “It’s one of the largest intakes our shelter has experienced. We’ve been working around the clock to prepare for all the care these rabbits will need and we need the community’s help.”
We had never received so many animals at once before, and nothing could have prepared us for the amount of time, effort, and resources it would require. But thankfully, we had you.

Thank you to our animal-loving community for your support!
Our call for help was met with compassion and enthusiasm in every way.
Thank you to our donors! Whether you made a gift of $1 or $100, every penny has made a life-changing impact on these animals.
Thank you to every individual and organization who filled our lobby and storage with hundreds of deliveries! We received supplies like rabbit food, hay, treats, Vitamin C supplements, digital scales, and even mini-fridges to help us store all the fresh veggies.
Thank you to our network of foster volunteers! Within four days, over a hundred fosters stepped forward to provide a temporary home for 148 of the rabbits. And thanks to the donations we’ve received, our team was able to provide every foster home with the supplies they needed to care for their rabbit.
Thank you to our transfer partners that collectively took in over 60 rabbits and offered assistance!
