Lost Pet Prevention Month: Finders, Helpers, Heroes

The days and weeks leading up to and following the Fourth of July are when the highest number of pets go missing each year. Fireworks, open doors, and unfamiliar guests can quickly turn a fun celebration into a stressful ordeal for pet parents. That is why July is recognized as Lost Pet Prevention Month, a time to raise awareness about how to keep pets safe and what to do if a pet goes missing.
But this month is not just about protecting our own furry family members. It is also about empowering our entire community to play an active role in animal welfare. Whether you are securing your pet at home or helping a stray on the street, each of us has the power to prevent lost pets and reunite animals with their families. When fewer pets go missing or are returned home quickly, it reduces stress for families and eases pressure on open-admission shelters like the Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County. This helps ensure space is available for animals in urgent need.
A Community Effort
Preventing lost pets or reuniting them quickly with their families directly improves the welfare of every animal in our care. When pets spend less time in shelters, resources can be focused on those who truly have nowhere else to go.
Simple actions make a big impact:
- Keep collars and ID tags securely fastened.
- Make sure your pet’s microchip information is up to date.
- Use local lost-and-found pet platforms and community social media groups.
- Lend a hand when you find a stray in your neighborhood.
Each of these steps may seem small, but together they create a strong safety net for pets.
The Power of the Friendly Finder Program
A great example of this community-based approach is our Friendly Finder Program, launched earlier this year. In just a few months, it has already helped more than 550 lost pets reunite with their families.
Friendly Finders are everyday neighbors who temporarily care for a found pet while we support their efforts. We post the pet on our website, help locate the family, and provide needed supplies. By keeping pets out of the shelter, we preserve critical space for animals facing true emergencies.
It is a win for the pet, a win for their family, a win for the shelter, and a win for the community.
