Flooded but Unshaken: How We’re Powering Through for the Animals
The animals? Totally fine. Our pipes? Totally dramatic!
This certainly wasn’t how we planned to spend our weekend.
Our focus is, and always has been, the animals in our care, the staff and volunteers who show up for them every day, and the community we’re proud to serve, including our animal control partners and pet owners in need. So, when a plumbing issue bubbled up (literally) in our adoptions lobby, it was all hands, boots, and hearts on deck.
On Friday, team members from every corner of the organization jumped into action, moving adoption supplies, computers, and critical equipment to make way for emergency plumbing and demolition crews. There was no time to waste, and no hesitation.
By Saturday morning the problem had escalated and so did our determination. We didn’t miss a beat. By Sunday morning, our adoptions team had quickly transformed our Pet Food & Supply Pantry at the west entrance into a fully functioning adoption space. It wasn’t ideal, but that didn’t stop 30 adoptions from happening that day.
To our community: thank you for your patience, flexibility, and trust. You show up for us just like we show up for the animals, and that makes all the difference.
This unexpected flood comes at a challenging time. Since early May, a section of our dog kennels has been under renovation, limiting our space and reducing our capacity. We managed that disruption carefully, but this added setback puts even more pressure on our team and our resources.
Ironically, we were already in the early stages of planning a lobby remodel. We even had a few request for proposals in hand. This incident has moved that plan into overdrive. While construction is underway, our operations will look a little different, and some things may take a bit longer. But the lifesaving work never stops.
Visiting the Shelter During Construction
We’re still here for the animals, and for you, but things will look a little different until repairs are complete:
- Adoptions are rerouted to the west side of the building, through what is known as our Pet Food & Supply Pantry door. This entrance will be open during regular business hours, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. Look for signage guiding you to the correct door.
- The Pet Food & Supply Pantry has temporarily relocated to the front, which was our adoption lobby entrance. The pantry will continue operating as usual from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
- Lost and found pet services continue to operate as usual through our Public Animal Receiving entrance, located on the north side of the building at the far left.
We know it’s a little clunky, but we appreciate your patience as we make the best of a tough situation. Be alert to new signage directing you where to go when you visit, and as always, our team is happy to help you find your way.
Here’s how you can help us get through this challenging time:
- Foster: Open your home to an animal in need while we navigate our reduced space.
- Donate: Help us manage emergency repair costs and continue investing in our lifesaving programs.
- Adopt: Take home a new best friend and make room for others in need.
- Volunteer: Your time and talents are more valuable than ever.
It’s hard to see the space where so many families came together now behind construction barriers. But we also see opportunity—a chance to reimagine how we welcome adopters, connect people with pets, and write even more happy endings.
Thank you for standing by us and the animals through every twist and turn. We truly couldn’t do this without you. Stay tuned for updates!
