You Made it Possible: Nine Dogs’ Journey from Neglect to Love
Four months ago, nine dogs were rescued from heartbreaking living conditions in Mason County after their owner had passed away. The Humane Society of Mason County (HSMC) quickly responded, but their foster-only capacity was stretched to the limit, and they desperately needed our help.
Our entire team jumped into action to care for the dogs when they arrived at the Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County. Each dog was experiencing various degrees of neglect, including dirty coats, tartar build-up, and infected ears.

Thanks to the remarkable generosity of our donors, our skilled veterinary team provided lifesaving care to these dogs, enabling them to recover from neglect and trauma. Several of the dogs found solace in nurturing foster homes for a period, aiding in their healing journey from the profound trauma they endured. Additionally, two dogs were transferred to trusted partners for continued care and placement.
We’re happy to share a few updates from this group of brave, kind dogs, who have found the happy endings they truly deserve.
Mocha

When HSMC officials found Mocha, she had a plastic bucket stuck on her head and a large painful abscess around her neck. At our shelter, our vet team thoroughly treated her wounds, clipped her overgrown toenails, and removed the caked feces from between her toes. Mocha went to recover at a foster home, and just a couple weeks later, was adopted into a loving family.
Poppy

Poppy’s adopter says, “She loves going on walks with her new brother and is adjusting well to having a cat around. She has an amazing personality: super gentle and sweet, and loves to howl when she’s excited for food, treats, and walks. She’s fitting in amazing and we love her so much.”
Gerald

Sweet Gerald recently graduated from obedience school! Look at him proudly walking with his adopter after receiving his graduation cap. Congratulations to Gerald and to the family who brought him home!
Milo

Milo’s adopter recently shared with us, “Milo came to us so sad and scared of everything. He has really opened up, settled down, started learning to walk on a leash and play with toys, and has become such a sweet companion. We look forward to watching him continue to grow and feel lucky to have the opportunity to pamper this boy into his senior years.”
Charlie

Charles loves his new family and is slowly settling into his new environment. His adopter says he still experiences some anxiety, but they’re doing everything in their power to help him decompress and relax.
We cannot express enough gratitude to our community for their unwavering support in aiding our efforts to care for these nine remarkable dogs. Thanks to your generosity, we are able to offer comprehensive care for Pierce County’s most vulnerable pets while also extending a helping hand to our committed partners in neighboring communities amidst the nationwide challenge of overpopulated shelters. We cannot do it without you!
