Euthanasia Policy
We Don’t Euthanize for Time or Space
The Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County works hard every day to ensure that every animal who comes through our doors has a chance at finding happiness. As one of the few open admission shelters in Washington state, we welcome pets of all ages, breeds, medical conditions, and behavioral needs.
We do not euthanize animals because they have been with us too long or due to space limitations. Euthanasia is only considered in two situations:
- An animal is terminally ill and in pain and suffering. Our veterinary staff works hard to provide the best medical care possible, but if there is nothing that a veterinarian can do to make an animal comfortable and that animal no longer has a quality of life, and no realistic chance of recovery then euthanasia may be the kindest option.
- Behavior that is dangerous to public safety. We work diligently to support animals struggling behaviorally, but if an animal presents a serious threat to people, other animals, or themselves, euthanasia may be considered. This is always a last resort and only undertaken with the agreement of our Pathway Planning Committee.
Due to these and other factors, we do not identify as a ‘no-kill’ shelter, nor do we use this term when referring to other organizations. Instead, we are committed to being an open-admission shelter that does not euthanize for time or space.
