New Mural Unveiled!

Our shelter just got a lot more colorful!
With our third and final Mural Muse Photo Contest complete, we’re proud to unveil a new, beautiful work of art to our amazing community.
The beautiful, large-scale mural features our top three winners: Arctic the husky, Chewy the orange tabby, and Juno the blue heeler. Thanks to our contestants and the incredible support behind them, this year’s contest raised more than $14,000 to help care for pets in need across Pierce County.
“Thanks to the incredible support of our donors, three of our community’s most cherished companions are immortalized in a breathtaking mural by the brilliant Mary Mann,” said Tacoma Humane Director of Development Beth Brooks. “It’s a win for the pets, a win for the community, and a testament to what happens when kind-hearted people come together. I am beyond grateful to the community for their support of Tacoma Humane and the critical work our staff carries out each day.”
The mural was painted by Mary Mann, a Tacoma-based artist who’s spent the past 31 years making our community more vibrant. Her local works include “The Ripple Effect” (located on the Schuster Parkway underpass) and “The Dragon with Poppies” on Weddermann Architecture (S. 48th and Yakima).
“I loved painting this mural, it gave me a lot of time to reflect on how important animals are and the joy that pets can bring to your life,” Mann said. “It was fun to see people arriving, so eager to pick up their newly adopted animals. I think the Humane Society provides such an important service.”
