Staff Spotlight: Heidi Lee, LVT
Meet Heidi Lee! Heidi is one of the Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County’s licensed veterinary technicians (LVT) who plays a vital role in ensuring each animal who comes to our shelter receives the medical care they need.
Q. How long have you been a staff member?
A. I have been here for four years. I previously worked at the shelter from 2005-2010 as a vet assistant until I received my veterinary technician license. I relocated out of state and spent some time in private practice to hone my new skills and learn new technology. It is rewarding to be able to use that experience with the equipment we now have at the shelter.
Q. What does a day in your life at the shelter look like?
A. I am either running the surgery room, taking care of animals, or helping the shelter’s veterinarians with procedures and exams. I also oversee supplies inventory and ordering for the veterinary and foster departments. I am always busy!
Q. What inspired you to work at the Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County?
A. I wanted to join the Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County because of the support we provide for pets and people in our community. Once I moved back to Washington and heard there was an LVT opening, I applied immediately.
I am proud to be a part of the Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County team. At the end of each day, no matter how challenging or emotional the work is, I feel like I’ve made a difference. I love that through our three-year strategic plan we are focused on broadening our support services to communities that need it most.

Q. Any special stories you’d like to share?
A. One of the most memorable stories I have been a part of is the large rabbit confiscation case earlier this year. The rescue was a collaborative effort with Pierce County Animal Control. Going out in the field with the animal control officers to assess the condition of the rabbits and coordinate their transport to the shelter was unlike anything I had ever been a part of! It was an all-day endeavor, but it was so rewarding to play a role in the rabbits’ road to recovery.
I also really love our Vaccine and Wellness Clinics and being able to help the community. The clients are always so appreciative of the opportunity to access low-cost essential wellness care for their pets.
