Creating Connection for Seniors Through Pet Adoption

Dove heads home with her excited new family, thanks to Pets for the Elderly

At the close of 2025, the Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County was selected by Pets for the Elderly as their only partner shelter in Washington State, and along with that came a  grant to help reduce adoption fees for folks in our community aged 60 and older. We’re incredibly grateful for the support, but even more elated about what it’s already making possible.

The partnership kicked off on January 1, and honestly, the response has been amazing. Just three months in, 72 pets have found homes through this program, with 46 of those adoptions happening in March alone. It’s been such a joy to see so many connections forming between people and their new companions.

If you’re not familiar, Pets for the Elderly helps make pet adoption more accessible for older adults, with a focus on companionship and connection. That mission fits so naturally with what we believe in, the idea that animals and people are simply better together.

Every one of these adoptions means a little less loneliness, a little more purpose, and a second chance for a shelter pet who needed it. That’s the kind of impact we love to see!

A massive thank you goes out to Pets for the Elderly for partnering with us, and to our community for always showing up in such a big way. We can’t wait to see what the rest of the year brings!
