‘Mystery’ Dog Respiratory Illness

The ‘Mysterious’ Respiratory Illness

Recent media coverage has shed light on an unusual respiratory illness affecting dogs across the nation. Reported symptoms include coughing that does not respond well, or at all, to standard treatments such as antibiotics. In some dogs, the cough lasts weeks or even months, turning into pneumonia.

So far, this seems to be a rise in canine respiratory disease complex (CIRDC), which isn’t uncommon to see this time of year. CIRDC or “kennel cough” symptoms include coughing, fever, lethargy, nasal or eye discharge and labored breathing, like those reported for the mystery respiratory illness.

“Just as humans experience a surge in cold and flu cases this time of year, furry companions can face similar challenges with CIRDC,” explains Dr. Jennifer Bennett, chief veterinary officer at the Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County. “It’s a timely reminder to remain vigilant about your pets’ health and to take proactive measures to ensure their well-being.”

The State Veterinarian and the Washington Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (WADDL) are actively overseeing respiratory cases statewide, requiring veterinarians to promptly report animals meeting criteria for a potential emerging disease.

“To date, only two cases in the state have prompted further investigation,” says Dr. Bennett. “While it remains uncertain whether we are simply seeing a seasonal increase in CIRDC cases or dealing with a new organism, the exact nature of the widely reported respiratory illness is still being evaluated.”

Prioritizing Shelter Pet Well-being

At the Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County, we maintain rigorous hygiene protocols and closely monitor our animals’ health. We offer a safe place for those seeking a new pet, with an adoption process designed to prioritize everyone’s safety. Our thorough pre-adoption measures, including wellness exams, vaccines, spaying/neutering, and microchipping, ensure our animals are happy and healthy for adoption.

“The health and well-being of the pets in our care remains our shelter’s top priority,” says Dr. Bennett.  “Amidst concerns about the respiratory illness, our shelter has not seen any dog to date that meets the criteria for a new disease variant.”

Tips to Keep Your Dog Safe

With the prevalence of upper respiratory illness on the rise, dogs that spend time in close proximity with other dogs, such as in training groups, dog parks, and grooming facilities, are at an increased risk of contracting respiratory illnesses.

To ensure your dog’s well-being, taking the following steps will help minimize the risk of exposing your dog at home to canine respiratory illnesses:

  • Consult with your veterinarian to ensure your pet is up to date on respiratory disease vaccinations including Bordetella and Canine Influenza, and Distemper virus.
  • Avoid dog parks and other areas where multiple dogs are grouped together.
  • Avoid communal water bowls, toys, and objects.
  • Limit time at doggy day care and boarding facilities.
