Finding Your Lost Pet

View Found Pets

Five Simple Steps To Finding Your Pet

  • Browse the online listings of pets in the shelter.
Take a look at View Found Pets to see if your pet may be listed on the shelter database. If you do not see your pet listed, do not assume it is not at the shelter!
  • Inspect all the pets visible in the shelter.
Take your time, or walk through twice to make sure you’ve seen all the pets. All stray pets are held a minimum of two business days. We recommend you visit the shelter at least every other day.
  • View the five binders on the front counter.
These binder list animals handled and/or reported that are not on display in public view at the shelter. Start with the date your pet was lost and check all the later entries. If you believe your pet is listed here, contact a customer service representative for help.
  • Call a “Found Pet Recording” number daily.
For dogs: 253-596-8561 or for cats: 253-596-8989. You will hear a listing of all the pets found the previous day. Each pet found is only listed once, on the first business day following the date of impound.
  • Don’t give up too soon.
Someone may have found your pet and not reported it or has been delayed bringing it to the shelter. Your pet may also still be lost. Some pets have been reunited with their owners months after being lost. If a pet comes to us with any form of I.D., we will contact the owner either by phone or by mail.

If Your Pet Is Still Lost

  • Continue to follow the suggestions above.
  • Contact the people closest to where your pet was lost.
  • Post signs in the area, with a description and a photo if possible.
  • Take out a classified ad in the local newspaper. Many newspapers offer free “lost pet” ads.
