Our Commitment

The Humane Society is “Counting Down to Zero” euthanasia of healthy, adoptable pets.  Despite the combined efforts of compassionate and vigilant volunteers and employees – the Humane Society was forced to euthanize 2,097 healthy, adoptable pets in 2007.

  • THe Humane Society never turns a pet away.  In 2007, 15,842 animals were abandoned, lost or unwanted and found shelter at the Humane Society. This means the shelter opened its doors to an average of more than a 1,300 animals a month, 55 animals a day.

The Humane Society’s “Countdown to Zero” Agenda:

Help every owner find their lost pet. The Humane Society will be vigilant in its efforts to reunite owners with their lost pets, and explore creative methods of helping owners find lost pets.

“Fix the Problem.”  A low-cost, high-volume spay/neuter clinic centrally located and accessible to low-income resident is essential to lowering the pet overpopulation problem.

As an open-admission shelter that never turns a pet away, the Humane Society must drastically reduce the number of animals entering the shelter if the goal of zero euthanasia is to be reached. Spaying and neutering is the answer.

Make the Humane Society the first choice for pet adoption. Encourage pet adoption, and explore creative ways to promote adoption and position the Humane Society as the best choice for obtaining a pet.
