You Made it Possible: Four Formerly Emaciated Dogs Are Living Life to the Fullest
Last fall, an unusually high number of weak, injured, and emaciated dogs arrived at our shelter within weeks of each other. It took every member of our veterinary team to provide them the thorough medical care they needed, plus a handful of caring fosters to help these vulnerable dogs gain weight and strength.
Now, Muffin, Marnie, Rory, and Thomas have all been adopted into loving families where they continue to grow and thrive. Here’s a heartwarming update of how all four doing in their new homes:
Muffin (New Seymour)
At our shelter, we used a “bear hug” device to increase his body temperature while providing fluids to treat his dehydration and after a few hours of care, the sweet dog eventually perked up. He was placed on a feeding plan to help him safely gain weight and he was adopted into a family who had this to say about the gentle dog:
“We decided to rename him ‘Seymour’ after the observatory in Wright Park, where he was found. He’s a complete sweetheart who loves exploring the outdoors, meeting new people, and cuddling with his family. He’s a happy and healthy boy.”
Marnie (Now Kaia)
Now, Marnie, renamed Kaia by her adopters, is doing amazing in her new home and has gained 25 much needed pounds since she went home. She fits in well with her family and has two dog siblings! Congratulations, Kaia!
Rory (Now Dewey)
Rory, now named Dewey, arrived emaciated, lethargic, and with infected wounds on his legs that required UV light therapy to effectively treat. His gentle demeanor won the hearts of our veterinary team, and he slowly put on a healthy amount of weight in our care. Soon, Dewey’s adopter came along, brought the kind dog home, and had this to say about his transformation:
“Dewey is doing absolutely fabulous! He is a such a sweet and loving dog, despite of everything he went through. He is the smartest dog ever and loves going to the dog park and going on car rides. I can’t express how thankful I am that we are the family that is able to give him all the love, attention and treats that he deserves.” -Dewey’s adopter
Thomas
Poor Thomas’ case was the most severe of all. He was found curled up on a doorstep, desperate for someone to bring him inside from the cold and give him a meal. He had wounds on his hips and paws, was hypothermic, and too weak to stand.
At our shelter, our vet team tended to his wounds, provided him lifesaving fluids, and wrapped him in warm blankets to increase his body temperature. Slowly, Thomas regained enough energy to walk, and he was sent to a foster home to gain weight and strength. Now, Thomas is in a loving home where he is safe and can finally relax.
Thanks to the immediate action from our compassionate community, these four exceptional dogs received the urgent care they needed in a life or death situation. Thank you for being the beacon of hope for these dogs and thousands more vulnerable pets!
